Get moving. Your health depends on it.

It’s that time of year. You know what time I’m talking about right? The time of the year we celebrate the holidays with family and friends.  And that means dinners, parties and more.  Even when we try SO HARD to stay on track, there are those goodies on the table that we can’t resist because we only eat them once a year.

On top of eating more goodies than usual, we are not as active as we used to be. Our lifestyles have changed. Gone are many jobs that required physical activity as they have been replaced with jobs using technology that has us sitting for eight plus hours each day.




Sure you can go out and buy one of those desks that raise up. Now you can stand in one spot instead of sitting. Not sure about you but I’m certain that will not work for me. I’m one of those people that tends to switch back and forth on my feet when standing, talking, etc.  That means that I would be putting all my weight on side or the other.  It took me almost three years to get my hip straightened out from the Marine Corp Marathon and I’m not looking to go back down that road anytime soon.

So what can we do?  It is simple actually. Get up and move every hour.  Sounds easy doesn’t it? Well it may not be as easy as you think.  As mentioned, recovering from a hip injury that was made worse by sitting the majority of the day made it a priority for me to get up and move throughout the day.  The first few days, I did not do so well.  When I am focused on my work, I am laser focused and time gets away from me.

In order to fix this problem, my friend that many of you know, Coach Becky, suggested I set a timer.  So I went online found a timer that I could set and got to work.  In 45 minutes, the timer went off. Let me tell you it was HARD to stop and get up.  I was afraid I would lose track of where I was but I didn’t.  I got up, walked around for a few minutes, went back to my desk and reset the timer.

For the most part it worked.  When it didn’t work it was my fault because I forgot to set the timer.  On the days I remembered to set that timer during my work hours, I felt better.  Wasn’t as sluggish and tired.  Something to be said about getting up hourly throughout the day.

My mother actually has a Fitbit that reminds her every hour to get up and move.  She has mentioned to me that almost every day she gets 10,000 steps which is recommended.  Even better? She has maintained her weight, continues to stay off most medications and feels fantastic. She’s a young 79.

The moral of this story? Get up and get moving. A healthier you depends on it. Have a wonderful week!
