Are you ready to grab your snorkel gear and explore? No matter what time of year it is, it is always a great time to snorkel and see marine life in its natural habitat.

What can you expect to see while snorkeling?

This area is the perfect place to explore underwater. You may see sea turtles, hermit crabs, sand dollars, sea stars, maybe a bottlenose dolphin or two, an abundance of sea shells, and more in these warm shallow waters in the Gulf of Mexico.

If you have never snorkeled, I recommend tours for each of these beautiful places to explore below. The guides will take you to the best places to see lots of fish and everything else under the sea.

Are there coral reefs in the Tampa area?

Yes, there are, but they are artificial reefs that were created by shipwrecks, bridge rubble, and even retired military equipment. This area offers 22 reefs for you to explore.

What are the best months to snorkel in Florida?

The best months to snorkel are April through August. You can snorkel other times of the year, but the water will be cooler.

Ready to discover the beauty of Tampa Bay’s and surrounding beaches underwater world?

Let’s explore the stunning underwater world of Tampa Bay and surrounding areas with one of the best snorkeling tours in town.

Have fun in the warm waters as you explore beautiful coral reefs and encounter marine life you would not be able to see any other way.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, these destinations offer a unique opportunity to discover the beauty that lies beneath the surface of this part of the Sunshine State’s crystal-clear waters.

Don’t miss out on this incredible experience during your visit to Tampa.

St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach are perfect for snorkeling. Here’s why.

The crystal-clear waters of Tampa Bay provide the perfect conditions for exploring the underwater world. St. Petersburg as well as St. Pete Pier and St. Pete Beach are incredible for snorkeling.

With vibrant coral reefs and a diverse range of marine life, these areas offer a truly unforgettable snorkeling experience.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, you’ll be amazed by the beauty and tranquility that awaits beneath the surface.

Sunset Beach which is located on Treasure Island, offers a great place to snorkel during summer months.  The currents though during winter make it more difficult to snorkel.

Be sure to check with a lifeguard before entering the water as there are often strong currents and/or rip currents in this area

Don’t miss out on the chance to discover the hidden treasures of St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach on your next snorkeling adventure. This area provides a wonderful opportunity for the entire family to enjoy a day on the water.

The absolute BEST tour for St. Pete and the one I always recommend? It’s the 6-Hour Eco Tour. Get more information here: 6 Hour St. Pete Eco Tour

One of the best snorkeling locations near St. Pete is Shell Key Island. I recommend the island ferry Shell Key Shuttle to take you over. Get more information here: Shell Key Shuttle

Explore the underwater beauty of Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach, with its white sandy beaches, is a paradise for snorkelers. With its crystal-clear waters and amazing opportunity to see marine life up close, Clearwater Beach absolutely delivers an unforgettable snorkeling experience.

Dive into the vibrant coral reefs and encounter a variety of colorful fish and other marine creatures. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, Clearwater Beach has a place for you to explore.

Clearwater Beach is also an amazing destination for dolphin watching. Bottlenose dolphins play off the coast in the blue-green waters.

If you have never seen a wild dolphin, enjoy one of the sunset cruises that will take you to where you will be able to see the dolphins.

Indian Rocks Beach, south of Clearwater, is another place you snorkel, but the reefs are quite a way offshore. It is a place you can take the whole family to snorkel right off the beach, so the little ones can get used to swimming with a mask and fins.

The best snorkel tour option I recommend for Clearwater Beach is Little Toot Dolphin Adventure at Clearwater Beach. Also, very affordable. Get more information here: Little Toot Dolphin Adventure at Clearwater Beach

Enjoy crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery around Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is absolutely one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is also a hidden gem for snorkelers seeking crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery.

With its pristine beaches and stunning marine life, Anna Maria Island offers a unique snorkeling experience. This beautiful barrier island not only offers amazing snorkeling but some of the most beautiful beaches you will ever step on.

Dive into the turquoise waters and discover vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful fish and other fascinating marine creatures. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced snorkeler, Anna Maria Island has something for everyone.

Bradenton Beach, located on the southern end of the island is where you will find the Regina Wreck was named the 10th addition to Florida’s 12 Underwater Archaeological Preserves.

I have an article with detailed information about snorkeling on Anna Maria Island. You can read it here: Snorkeling Anna Maria Island, Florida: A Guide To The Best Places

Create unforgettable memories on an exciting snorkeling adventure at Fort DeSoto Park

Fort De Soto Park is made up of five interconnected islands. It is a fantastic destination for snorkeling as well as an opportunity to see amazing wildlife in the park. Explore everything not only underwater but above as well.

Wild life inside the park includes bald eagles, gopher tortoises, and over 300 species of birds. Underwater you may sea sand dollars, seashells and more depending on the water clarity.

North Beach is more popular, but South Beach allows you to wade farther from shore. Here the sea grass beds help to filter the water, and you may catch a glimpse of the illusive Queen Conch as well as sponges and crabs.

Near Fort DeSoto Park are the Outback Key Islands. This key has formed just off Fort De Soto’s North Beach and will either connect to a spot in the park or will disappear. The unique way it is created is what is called an ebb shoal which is a natural way of creating islands.

It has come and gone a few times in the past. You do need to be careful because even though you can walk over to the island, the current can be quite strong.

For Fort De Soto Park, you can literally walk into the water to snorkel. Enjoy a day in the sun and bring lunch or a snack.

Want to explore the park? The best way to do that is with an electric bike tour. You will see everything from the park, wildlife, beaches and more.

Get more information here: Electric Bike Wildlife & History Tour along Fort De Soto’s Beaches Truly a fun way to squeeze everything into a day.

Egmont Key State Park is perfect to explore with private snorkel tours.

You can see the island of Egmont Key State Park from Fort De Soto Park, but it is not part of that park. A tropical island, Egmont Key is only accessible by boat, and you will often see a pontoon boat or fishing boat anchored offshore.

I definitely recommend you take a boat tour and guide over to the island if you are not an experienced snorkeler. This island is in the mouth of Tampa Bay and the currents can be quite strong.

Another thing I want to mention is the stingray shuffle. You may have heard of it. It’s recommended when walking into any beach in this part of the Sunshine State, you shuffle your feet to avoid stepping on a stingray.

For Egmont Key Snorkeling, I recommend this tour: Egmont Key Snorkeling Dolphin Tour

These are my top destinations for snorkeling opportunities in the Tampa Bay Area. While you are in that area, be sure to enjoy a game at Tropicana Field or book a tiki bar boat cruise and watch the sunset.
