What is the history of Silver Springs State Park in Florida

Silver Springs State Park is a popular tourist attraction located in central Florida, known for its crystal-clear springs, glass-bottom boat tours, and diverse wildlife.

The park has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century when it was first discovered by settlers.

In the mid-1800s, the area was home to a small community of Native Americans who used the springs for drinking water and as a sacred site.

In 1852, a businessman named Phillip Morrell purchased the land and built a small hotel near the springs, which he called the Silver Springs Hotel.

As the popularity of the springs grew, so did the number of visitors to the area. In 1878, the state of Florida purchased the land and turned it into a public park, making it one of the country’s first tourist attractions.

Over the years, the park has undergone several changes and renovations, including the addition of the famous glass-bottom boat tours in the 1920s.

Today, Silver Springs State Park is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, offering a variety of recreational activities, including kayaking, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

While on the Glass Bottom Boat Tour, you will be able to see props in the water near the main spring head. These props were left after a movie was filmed in the park.

One thing I must mention. When kayaking, follow the rules of the road. Stay to the right.

My last visit to this gorgeous park was a month ago. I have never seen, so many near accidents for people in kayaks or on paddle boards.

Just like when you drive a car, you stay to the right. Guys, it is not so easy to get back into a kayak once you capsize. Add into that equation, there may be an alligator on the riverbank, and you are not able to swim to the side

Now that I’ve provided you with PSA for the day, grab a paddle and get ready to explore the beauty of the Silver River.

Plan your visit and make the most of your trip.
