Healthy Living: Be The Boss Of Your Body

Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live. Jim Rohn

When you read that quote, it really puts things into perspective doesn’t it?  Our bodies are amazing but there is a tipping point if you do not take care of it and illness may set in.  Where will you go when that happens?  You cannot magically move into another body.  That is why it’s critical to take care of the body you were born with. Or to put it another way – why you need to be the boss of your body.

When we were kids, we didn’t really think too much about taking care of our bodies.  We were jumping out of trees, hanging from ropes, swimming where we shouldn’t be, and so many other things that makes us shudder today. Shoot I get nervous these days on a trampoline!  Those warning signs when we shouldn’t do something? Pay attention to them.

It has been said if you want to live to be a hundred years old, don’t fall. Unfortunately one out of every four Americans over the age of 65 fall each year. Not only are seniors more likely to fall, they are more likely to also experience fall related illnesses as a result of that fall including head trauma or a broken bone.

What can we do?  We need to be the boss of our bodies and that means taking care of them.  You know what to expect from your body today and if you take care of it, your body will take care of you for a long time. That also means accepting your body and giving it what it needs to thrive in the form of nutrition and exercise.

How to be the boss of your body.

Just as a manager is in control of a many employees, you are in control of your body. This means you must:

  1. Eat to support your body.  Say no to junk or processed foods and say yes to shopping the perimeter or outside aisles of your grocery store. Think about it. Where are the freshest products? In the dairy, meat, and produce sections. That is exactly where the majority of your food shopping should happen.
  2. Breathe.  I can hear you already, “I do breathe Denise. What are you talking about?”  I’m talking about really focusing on your breath.  We take breathing for granted but think of breathing as life-giving.  Inhale through your nose and feel that breath go all the way into your belly then slowly exhale.  It makes a difference when you are conscious of your breathing. That is why yoga is breathing focused.
  3. Give your body the movement it craves.  Our bodies are designed to move. That is clear by they way we are created.  Our knees and elbows hinge.  Our hips are ball and joint sockets.  Our head turns side to side, up and down.  The more you move the better you feel as you keep your joints lubricated.  Simply taking a walk has been proven to not only help the body but our mood as well.

How we feel is often a direct result of how our body feels and that is why you need to be the best boss you can be.  Have a wonderful week!

To your health,

Denise
