Why Choose Florida for a Budget Weekend Getaway?
Affordable Accommodations
One of the biggest expenses when traveling is your accommodations. In Florida, you can find affordable options, from beachfront hotels to cozy Airbnb rentals.
Many hotels and resorts offer special deals and discounts for weekend stays, making it easier to find a budget-friendly place to stay.
Endless Outdoor Activities
Yes, Florida is known for its beautiful beaches, but there’s so much more to explore. From state parks to nature reserves, there are plenty of outdoor activities that won’t cost you a dime.
I live my life outdoors. Take a hike, go for a swim, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun. They are all free.
Delicious and Affordable Food
One of the best things about Florida, are all the different cultures. This makes for a very delicious food scene.
From Cuban sandwiches to fresh seafood, food trucks to restaurants on the beach, there’s something for every taste and budget.
You can find affordable and tasty meals at local food trucks, farmer markets, and even some upscale restaurants at certain times of the day.
Be creative. You can eat breakfast and dinner in your hotel room or vacation rental, and go out for lunch when it is less expensive.
Top Budget Weekend Getaways in Florida
St. Augustine
St. Augustine. One of my favorite weekend destinations. Known as the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine is a charming and historic destination that won’t break the bank.
Explore the city’s history by visiting the Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th-century fort, stroll through the cobblestone streets of the Old City, grab a slice of pizza on St. George Street.
For a budget-friendly activity, head to the St. Augustine Lighthouse and climb to the top for stunning views of the city and the ocean.
Key West
Key West may not be at the top of your list for “budget”. It is known for luxurious resorts and high-end restaurants, but it’s also possible to enjoy this tropical paradise on a budget.
You can find affordable accommodations in the form of guesthouses and hostels, and there are plenty of free activities to enjoy, such as watching the sunset at Mallory Square or visiting the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum.
Don’t forget to try a slice of Key Lime pie, a local specialty, for a sweet and budget-friendly treat.
Daytona Beach
For a classic beach getaway, head to Daytona Beach. Believe it or not, it is more on the affordable side for weekend vacations.
Daytona offers a variety of budget-friendly activities, from swimming and sunbathing to fishing and surfing. You can even drive onto the beach and bring a picnic with you for lunch.
Visit the Daytona Beach Boardwalk and Pier, where you can find affordable food and entertainment options.
St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg, also known as “The Sunshine City”, can be a budget-friendly destination on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Spend your days lounging on the beach, exploring the city’s many museums and galleries, or taking a stroll through the colorful and lively Central Avenue.
For a budget-friendly activity, head to the Sunken Gardens, a beautiful botanical garden that offers a peaceful escape from the city. After all, walking is free and it’s great exercise.
Amelia Island
Amelia Island is another one of my annual weekend getaway destinations. Located in Northeast Florida, Amelia Island is charming and laid-back with a variety of budget-friendly activities.
You can spend your days relaxing on the beach, exploring the historic downtown area, or taking a bike ride through the island’s scenic trails.
For a unique experience, take a guided tour of the island’s salt marshes and learn about the local wildlife. Visit the state parks including Fort Clinch where you can walk to the beach and search for shark teeth.
Tips for Planning a Budget Weekend Getaway in Florida
Travel During the Off-Season
Florida is a popular destination year-round, but you can save money by traveling during the off-season. This is typically from September to November and from February to May but watch for areas that are busy during Spring Break like Miami.
During off season, you can find better deals on hotels and vacation rentals, as well as activities. Also, the beaches and attractions are less crowded.
Take Advantage of Free Activities
As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of free things to do in the Sunshine State. Take advantage of these to save money and still have a great time.
Some great and free activities include visiting state parks, attending local festivals and events, and exploring the city on foot.
Use Public Transportation
If you’re staying in a one of the larger cities, use public transportation to get around instead of renting a car. That will save you money on gas and parking fees.
Many cities in Florida, such as St. Augustine and Key West, offer trolley or bus services that can take you to popular attractions for a low cost. The trolley is always my first choice when in a new city, and it’s available.
Look for Deals and Discounts
Before booking your trip, do some research to find deals and discounts on accommodations, activities, and transportation.
Many hotels and resorts offer special packages for weekend stays, and you can also find discounts on activities and attractions through websites. Priceline is a great place to start your search for last minute deals. Check current deals here: Priceline Deals
