The Abandoned Cape Romano Dome Houses
Located on the southern tip of Marco Island in Florida, the abandoned Cape Romano Dome Houses was a unique and mysterious destination like no other. This secluded spot, though, is no longer, as it was wiped out by Hurricane Ian in 2022.
The iconic Cape Romano Dome House, a series of dome-shaped structures that have been abandoned and left to the elements, is no longer. Before the hurricane, it was a destination like no other and part of the Ten Thousand Islands.
I am sad that I had not made it out to the dome house before Hurricane Ian destroyed what had been remaining.
The History of Cape Romano
The Cape Romano Dome House has a very interesting history and was built in 1980 by retired oil producer Bob Lee. The unique design of the house was meant to withstand hurricanes and other natural disasters, with its dome-shaped structures and elevated design.

However, due to changes in the shoreline and erosion, the house was eventually abandoned in the 1990s. Although today, the Cape Romano is no longer available as a popular spot for tourists and locals, you can still see stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico that you would have seen from the dome house.
The Abandoned Structures
Visitors to the Cape Romano can no longer explore the abandoned dome structures by boat or kayak. The structures were located about a mile offshore, making it an adventure for those looking to kayak over, depending on the weather.
Prior to the hurricane, you would see the dome-shaped structures appear, covered in graffiti and surrounded by the crystal blue waters of the Gulf. It’s very sad to me that the Hurricane Ian took those domes out.
Cape Romano Dome House Photos
Even though they no longer exist, those looking to capture the beauty and mystery of the Cape Romano can still see it in the many photos online. The abandoned dome structures made for a stunning backdrop, especially during sunrise and sunset.
Should You Visit?
The structures were only accessible by boat or kayak and as mentioned, they are no longer. You can still kayak out, but all you will see are the pilings.
The abandoned Cape Romano were a bucket list destination for many that enjoy an off-the-beaten-path adventure, like I do.
The Cape Romano dome house may no longer be there, but this area of the Sunshine State is truly spectacular for a vacation.
You may not see the dome home as it was, but you can still take a boat tour through the Ten Thousand Islands. That is what I am doing soon, and this tour will take you out there: Best Of Marco Island Tour
