Florida is known for its beautiful beaches, warm weather, and endless sunshine. But did you know that it is also home to a hidden gem known as the Ten Thousand Islands? I am getting ready for a glamping trip in the Everglades, and a tour of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands is on the agenda.
Located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, this island paradise is a must-visit for any nature lover or outdoor enthusiast like me, and I am so excited to explore it all.
In this article, let’s take a look at the top ways to explore Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands that I have found so far. I will be updating this article upon my return, so be sure to bookmark it.

It is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including dolphins, manatees, alligators, and over 200 species of birds. It does include Marco Island as well as Chokoloskee Island that is connected to the Everglades and Everglades City.
The majority of the islands though are uninhabited today, but they were once inhabited by Native Americans. The lack of people, roads, and more makes this area perfect for nature lovers who want to explore.
A Hidden Paradise
The Ten Thousand Islands is a hidden paradise that offers a peaceful and secluded escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
With no roads or bridges connecting the islands, the main way to access them is by boat, kayak or canoe. There are some islands you can primitive camp after you reach them by boat. Remember, you carry in and out what you bring.
How To Explore The Ten Thousand Islands
Kayaking and Canoeing
One of the best ways to explore the Ten Thousand Islands is by kayaking or canoeing through its winding waterways. This allows you to get up close and personal with the diverse wildlife and experience the beauty of the mangrove forests.
There are several rental companies in the area that offer guided tours or equipment for rent, making it easy for anyone to explore the islands by water.
Boat Tours
I will be taking a boat tour because this is my first visit to this island chain. The boat is a leisurely way to explore the Ten Thousand Islands. This is one we are looking at: Ten Thousand Islands Boat Tour
These tours offer a unique perspective of the islands and allow you to cover more ground in a shorter amount of time. Many tour companies also offer eco-tours, where you can learn about the history and ecology of the islands from knowledgeable guides.
Honestly? Whenever I visit an area that is new to me and especially if it involves areas where there is complete wilderness, I prefer to view it first by boat, trolley or with a guided tour.
You can get lost in these islands because so many channels and canals look the same.
Fishing
The Ten Thousand Islands is a very popular destination for fishing enthusiasts, with its shallow bays and abundance of marine life.
You can fish from a boat or kayak, or even try your hand at fly-fishing in the mangrove forests. Some of the most common catches in the area include snook, redfish, and tarpon.
Wildlife Viewing
With its diverse ecosystem, and lack of people, the Ten Thousand Islands is a haven for wildlife.
From dolphins and manatees to alligators and a variety of bird species, there is no shortage of wildlife to observe.
You can take a guided tour or explore on your own, but be sure to keep a safe distance and respect the animals’ natural habitats.
And never feed any wild animals or marine life. Many ask me why, and the reason is that you teach wild animals to become dependent on humans, which is never a good scenario.
Camping
For a truly immersive experience, consider camping on one of the islands. There are several campsites available, accessible only by boat, where you can pitch a tent and spend the night under the stars.
This is a great option for those looking to disconnect from technology and fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Ten Thousand Islands.
Tips For Exploring The Ten Thousand Islands
Plan Ahead
Before embarking on your adventure to the Ten Thousand Islands, it’s important to plan ahead. This is exactly what I’m doing as I am writing this article for you.
I am researching to make sure I am not only prepared but can see as much as possible in these islands. Make sure you have all the necessary equipment, such as a map, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast and tides to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. If you are not a kayaker or boat enthusiast, PLEASE book with a guided tour for your safety.
Respect The Environment
The Ten Thousand Islands is a delicate ecosystem that must be protected. When exploring the islands, be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles and avoid disturbing the wildlife or damaging the mangrove forests.
It’s also important to properly dispose of any trash and leave the islands as you found them. As I mentioned above, whatever you carry in, you must carry out to preserve these islands.
Hire A Guide
For a more in-depth and educational experience, consider hiring a guide to explore the Ten Thousand Islands with you. They can provide valuable insights and knowledge about the area, as well as ensure your safety while navigating the waterways.
Be Mindful Of Wildlife
While observing wildlife is a highlight of exploring the Ten Thousand Islands, it’s important to remember that these animals are wild and should be treated with respect.
Keep a safe distance and never feed or approach them. It’s also important to be aware of your surroundings and watch out for any potential hazards, such as alligators or jellyfish.
It always amazes me when I come around a corner face to face with wildlife including deer, alligators, gopher turtles and more. I absolutely love seeing the animals and marine life in their natural surroundings.
And there you go. As mentioned, I will be updating this article when I return with more info for you.
