Island Hopping in Florida: A Quick Guide
Island hopping in Florida is an adventure in itself and one of my FAVORITE things to do. With so many islands to choose from, you can pick and choose the best to fit your interests.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet retreat, a family-friendly vacation, or a party scene, there’s an island for you.
And the best part? You can visit multiple islands in one trip!
Here’s a quick guide to get you started:
- Start with the popular Key West for its rich history and vibrant nightlife.
- Visit Dry Tortugas National Park for its unspoiled beauty.
- Don’t miss out on Sanibel Island’s famous shelling beaches.
- Explore the laid-back charm and artistic community of Captiva Island.
- Experience luxury resorts and natural beauty on Marco Island.
- Enjoy the secluded and exclusive feel of Gasparilla Island.
- Have a family-friendly vacation on Amelia Island.
- Dive into the Spanish colonial architecture on Anastasia Island near St. Augustine.
- Discover unique wildlife on Caladesi Island State Park.
- Finally, end your trip with the boating paradise of the Florida Keys.
Key West: A Blend of History and Fun
Key West is a must-visit for any Florida island hopper. It’s a place where history meets fun in a unique blend.
From the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum to the lively Duval Street, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to catch the sunset at Mallory Square for a truly unforgettable experience.
Dry Tortugas: Nature’s Untouched Paradise
Dry Tortugas National Park is a gem among Florida’s islands. I personally had the BEST time on this little island.
It’s a place where nature remains largely untouched. Unfortunately though, I did find sea glass on this island as well as plastic, which means civilization is not as far as it seems.
The park is home to Fort Jefferson, a massive but unfinished coastal fortress. It’s also a prime spot for snorkeling, with vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life.
Sanibel Island: The Shelling Capital
Sanibel Island is a paradise for shell collectors. Its beaches are littered with a variety of beautiful shells, making it a shelling capital.
The island also boasts a wildlife refuge, bike paths, and quaint shops. It’s a perfect spot for a laid-back vacation with a touch of adventure.
Captiva Island: Artistic and Laid-back
Just north of Sanibel, Captiva Island is a haven for artists and those seeking tranquility. Its vibrant art scene and relaxed vibe make it a unique destination.
The island is also known for its stunning sunsets. So, don’t forget to end your day by watching the sun dip below the horizon.
Marco Island: Where Luxury Meets Nature
Marco Island is the largest of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands. It’s known for its luxury resorts and breathtaking natural beauty. I recently took a boat tour of Ten Thousand Islands, which you can read here: Explore Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands
From its white sandy beaches to its vibrant wildlife, Marco Island offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. It’s a must-visit for anyone seeking a luxurious island getaway.
Gasparilla Island: Exclusive and Secluded
Gasparilla Island is a hidden gem among Florida’s islands. It’s known for its exclusive feel and secluded beaches.
Amelia Island: Family Fun and History
Another favorite of mine, Amelia Island is a family-friendly destination with a rich history. It’s a place where kids and adults alike can have fun and learn something new.
From its beautiful beaches to its historic sites, there’s something for everyone. It’s a must-visit for families planning a Florida island vacation.
The Florida Keys: A Boater’s Dream
The Florida Keys are a boater’s paradise. With crystal clear waters and abundant marine life, it’s a dream come true for water enthusiasts.
Whether you’re into fishing, diving, or simply cruising, the Keys have it all. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking for a nautical adventure in Florida.
