10 Must Do Things In Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades

Big Cypress National Preserve is a vast and diverse landscape located in southern Florida, just north of the famous Everglades National Park. After our visit to the Everglades, we made our way over to Big Cypress for a night of primitive camping.

What an adventure! I was pleasantly surprised about the whole experience and definitely would do it again.

This unique and beautiful preserve offers so much for you to experience as well. I really recommend stopping when in the Everglades or Southwest Florida/Everglades City area.

From hiking and camping to airboat tours and wildlife, there is something for everyone in Big Cypress National Preserve. Here are 10 must-do things to add to your itinerary when visiting this beautiful but wild national preserve.

Airboat Tours

One of the most popular activities in this preserve is taking an airboat tour.

These high-speed boat rides take you through the wetlands and swamps of the preserve, giving you a chance to see alligators, birds, and other wildlife up close. It’s a thrilling and unique way to experience the beauty of the preserve.

Hiking

With over 300 miles of trails, this preserve is a hiker’s paradise. From short, easy walks to longer, more challenging hikes, there is a trail for every level of hiker.

Some popular trails include the Kirby Storter Boardwalk, which takes you through a cypress swamp, and the Gator Hook Trail, which offers stunning views of the preserve’s prairies.

Camping

For those looking to immerse themselves in nature, camping in Big Cypress National Preserve is a must-do. The preserve offers both front country and backcountry camping options, with designated campsites and primitive camping areas.

We were in primitive camping, which means no electricity or water. When I tell you the night was black, it was BLACK. You literally could not see your hand in front of your face.

After getting used to the vault toilet as well as the darkness, it’s breathtakingly beautiful and away from all noise and light pollution. Wake up to the sounds of nature and spend your days exploring the preserve’s many trails and waterways.

Wildlife Viewing

Big Cypress National Preserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife, making it a prime spot for wildlife viewing. One of the coolest things you need to be sure to do is to drive the Wildlife Loop.

Loop road is 27 miles and Turner River / Wagonwheel / Birdon Roads Loop Drive is about 17 miles. I saw the BIGGEST alligator I have ever seen in my life.

This guy was HUGE. Look at his pic. He was on the opposite side of the creek that ran along the scenic loop.

Keep your eyes peeled for alligators, deer, panthers, and a variety of bird species. The preserve also offers guided wildlife tours, where you can learn more about the animals that call this place home.

Birding

With over 200 species of birds, Big Cypress National Preserve is a bird lover’s paradise. Grab your binoculars and head out on one of the many birding trails, or join a guided birding tour for a chance to spot some of the preserve’s more elusive species.

Fishing

Fishing is a popular activity in Big Cypress National Preserve, with opportunities to catch a variety of freshwater fish. You can fish from the shore or rent a canoe or kayak to explore the preserve’s waterways. Just make sure to have a valid Florida fishing license before casting your line.

Photography

With its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, Big Cypress National Preserve is a photographer’s dream. Whether you’re a professional or just enjoy taking photos, you’ll find endless opportunities to capture the beauty of this unique destination.

Big Cypress might not have the Z Tree like the Florida Everglades did, but I found these intertwined trees and snapped a pic. Nature is so amazing.

Swamp Walks

For a truly immersive experience, try a swamp walk in Big Cypress National Preserve.

These guided tours take you through the preserve’s wetlands, giving you a chance to see and learn about the plants and animals that call this place home.

Visit Mitchell Landing

Mitchell Landing is a popular spot in Big Cypress National Preserve. You can take a guided canoe trip through the mangrove tunnels, or rent a canoe or kayak to explore on your own. This is on my list to do next visit.

Attend a Ranger Program

Not ready to go it alone? Big Cypress National Preserve offers ranger-led programs, including guided hikes, campfire talks, and stargazing events. These programs are a great way to learn more about the preserve and its unique ecosystem.
