Beach Lover’s Road Trip from Amelia Island to St. Augustine
I am often asked how many beaches can be visited in a day or a weekend, so I thought I would work on a few articles to help you plan beach road trips. Today we are on a Beach Lover’s Road Trip from Amelia Island to St. Augustine – one of my favorite road trips.
You might actually be surprised how many beaches you can hit in a weekend getaway. I think my top in a day has been eight beaches. How? They were fairly close together.
Interestingly enough, each beach is different. You may drive less than a mile down A1A, and it feels like you step onto a beach in a different country. That is how unique each beach is and why I find them so fascination.
Exploring Florida’s Central Atlantic Coast
Today’s adventure, along Florida’s stunning Atlantic coastline, begins in charming Amelia Island and ends in the historic city of St. Augustine.

This long weekend road trip promises sun-soaked shores and an array of breathtaking beaches along the way. Ready? Enjoy the trip!
Amelia Island: We will begin our journey at this pristine barrier island, boasting 13 miles of uncrowded beaches. Fernandina Beach, a quaint Victorian seaport town, offers a blend of history and natural beauty, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Amelia Island is roughly 45 minutes from Jacksonville.
Big Talbot Island/Boneyard Beach: Boneyard Beach, located on Big Talbot Island, will have you believing you are no longer in Florida. One of the coolest beaches I have ever visited.
When you get to this beach, find a parking spot and enjoy the trail walk to the shoreline. There you will see giant driftwood trees and more. Take your time and explore the three miles of Boneyard Beach.
Little Talbot Island State Park: Just south of Amelia Island, discover this unspoiled paradise featuring five miles of secluded beaches and maritime forests, ideal for nature enthusiasts and beachcombers alike.
Jacksonville Beach: Embrace the vibrant atmosphere of this coastal city. Jacksonville Beach provides a lively scene with a bustling boardwalk, surfing opportunities, and a lively nightlife.
Neptune Beach: A hidden gem tucked between Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach offers a more laid-back ambiance with a charming oceanfront community.
Ponte Vedra Beach: Known for its high-end resorts and world-class golf courses, Ponte Vedra Beach also offers stunning stretches of white sand where you can relax and unwind. Watch for northern white whales offshore during the months of December through March.
Vilano Beach: As you approach St. Augustine, make a stop at Vilano Beach. This quieter spot is perfect for shell seekers and provides stunning views of the St. Augustine skyline.
Anastasia State Park: Just minutes from St. Augustine, this state park boasts four miles of pristine beach, nature trails, and ample opportunities for birdwatching and water activities. Make time to visit this one. It is one of the most gorgeous Sunshine State Parks, with quite a bit to see and do.
St. Augustine Beach: We will end this journey at the oldest city in the USA beach town with soft sands and a historic pier. Don’t miss the picturesque views and the chance to explore the nearby historic district.
Honestly? The best way to see ALL of this beautiful town and beach is either by trolley or from the water by boat. It is, though, a fairly walkable city in certain areas such as shopping on St. George Street which is across from Castillo de San Marcos Fort and National Monument.
As we move along Florida’s coastline on our road trips, take time to enjoy the diverse landscapes, vibrant beach communities, and serene natural beauty that each stop offers. Like me, you may be pleasantly surprised by how different each beach is.
Pack your sunscreen, beach gear, and sense of adventure for an unforgettable road trip filled with coastal delights along the Central Atlantic Coast of Florida.
