There are literally THOUSANDS of anti-aging products on the market for sale. After all, everyone wants to look and feel younger right? You already use all the lotions and potions to look younger but do you know what the BEST anti-aging product really is? Exercise.
That’s right. Exercise. An article recently published in the European Heart Journal reports that when it comes right down to what works the best to look and feel young, exercise – specifically cardio exercise – wins hands down. Endurance exercise such as running, swimming, biking or HIIT workouts (high intensity interval training) which include cardio both significantly slowed signs of aging. But don’t give up resistance and strength training as it also contributes to anti-aging helping with firmer, less saggy skin.
We all know weight loss, better mood, and toned muscles are a direct result of living an active lifestyle. But studies now report a direct link between all types of exercise and your skin’s ability to stay and look young. The reasons exercise contributes to a youthful appearance are many including:
- Sweating. When you sweat, your body releases a natural antibiotic known as Dermcidin, which kills E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. That alone is a win for your whole body. But sweating does even more. It is one of the most effective ways to remove toxins from the body and unclog pores that may contribute to acne and other skin eruptions.
- Increased blood flow to your skin. When you get up and get moving, your blood gets moving too. Not only does the oxygenated blood benefit your arms, legs and heart, it benefits your skin as well. Blood carries oxygen and essential nutrients to skin cells. Essentially a face lift from the inside out.
- Exercise reduces stress. Reduced stress means younger everything in your body including your skin. When you exercise regularly you maintain an even level of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress-related hormone that not only contributes to weight gain, but also affects sleep and even skin conditions such as acne. Cortisol also causes the skin to break down which in turn contributes to wrinkles. When you exercise, you maintain a normal level of cortisol which keeps your body on an even keel.
You already know the cost of “beauty” if you have been purchasing those skin lotions and potions. Exercise is significantly less expensive. You can go outdoors to walk or bike or head to the gym for less than the price of most skin care systems.
There is one lotion though you should always remember to put on your skin. Sunscreen. Sunscreen can help protect your skin from ultraviolet rays that contribute to skin cancer. So lather that sunscreen on and head outside for a walk. Your skin will thank you. Have a great week!
To your health,
Denise
