5 signs you're not taking care of yourself

Sluggish? Grumpy? Sleepy during the day? Lack of motivation? These are all signs you may not be taking care of yourself. And it can be having an effect on everyone around you and everything you do.

Since it’s January, you probably created a resolution or two regarding your health. Maybe decided to be more active or eat a healthier diet. All well and good but there are a few more things you should take a look at.

Are you taking care of yourself?

If you relate to any of the signs below, there’s a good chance you’re not taking care of yourself:

  • You feel sleepy all the time. A good night’s rest is as important as what you eat and making sure you move your body. If you are struggling to fall asleep and stay asleep, you need to discuss these issues with your doctor sooner rather than later. You may be battling sleep apnea in which your airways collapse disrupting your sleep cycle. Sleep apnea is linked to high blood pressure, weight gain and heart disease.
  • Brain fog. Brain fog goes beyond simply forgetting what you walked into the room for. You feel like you’re not yourself and you’re unable to think clearly. If you are sleeping well at night, brain fog could be caused by your hormones being out of whack or a possible issue with your thyroid.
  • You are super stressed. Little things can tick us off throughout the day. This is so me some days. “Hello. My name is Denise and I have terrible road rage when I’m stressed.” One thing that is guaranteed to raise my blood pressure sky high is when I’m minding my own business driving into town and a car doesn’t stop at the stop sign and pulls in front of me. Many times, they’re on their phone. I’m sure I look deranged screaming at them at the top of my lungs. Necessary? Probably not and one of the things I need to better control which means getting my stress in check. What helps me the most is meditation. If you have never meditated, this beginner meditation will help you relax and get a good night’s rest: Mindfulness for Anxiety and Sleep
  • Muscle twitches or cramps. We all have experienced random leg twitches now and then. Many of us spend long hours sitting at a desk which can cause these twitches and cramps. I know I have. If you’re experiencing these twitches frequently it may be due to a magnesium deficiency or you’re not keeping your body hydrated. Be sure you’re eating magnesium rich foods such as bananas and drinking the water your body needs every day. If you’re ready for a new career, this may help: Travel writing. • You are always tired mid-afternoon. You breeze through your morning then head out to lunch. When you return to what you were doing or to the office, you find you are tired mid-afternoon. Chances are you only need to look back to what you ate for lunch. High carb, processed foods can cause your sugar to spike then crash a few hours later. To feel better in the afternoon, focus on eating a balanced lunch that includes protein, healthy fats and lots of vegetables.

If you’ve been guilty of not taking care of yourself, a few simple changes will go a long way to helping you feel better.
